Good Dog, Bad Dog, New and Revised : Dog Training Made Easy

Good Dog, Bad Dog, New and Revised : Dog Training Made Easy

A best-selling classic since 1971, this practical guide to home training has been completely updated and expanded, with customized tips for one hundred different breeds.

Customer Review: Do not purchase
These books relies entirely on the use of aversives (collar choking) with dog training and does not use strong positive reinforcers like food. The methods are 50 years outdated and did not work at all with my dog. If you really want to know how your dog learns and how to teach him what you want him to do, buy Jean Donaldson's Culture Clash, perhaps the best book ever written about dogs.

Customer Review: A gold mine of information and ideas
Kathy Diamond-Davis knows dogs (and their handlers) like no other author I have ever read. This book carefully and clearly covers topics from choosing an appropriate dog for therapy work, through socializing the dog and building your relationship with the dog, to finding an appropriate organization to work with and doing therapy dog visits. She emphasizes positive training that builds the dog/human bond and produces a happy, friendly dog. Realistically, she emphasizes that not all dogs (and not all handlers) are suited for therapy work.

I am currently working with my second therapy dog, who is registered with Therapy Dogs Inc. and who visits hospice patients. The ideas in Kathy's book continue to make us a better team.

Positive Reinforcement: Training Dogs in the Real World

Positive Reinforcement: Training Dogs in the Real World Operant conditioning is a specific type of learning whereby behaviors are altered or changed primarily by manipulating the consequences that follow them. Author Brenda Aloff uses the theory of operant conditioning and applies it to dog training in this informative book. Written by an experienced dog trainer in language that the novice can easily understand, this step-by-step guide to reliable obedience and effective training method is based on the belief that the best way to teach your dog appropriate behavior is to use positive reinforcement instead of punishment.
Customer Review: Realistic, Thorough and Concise
Brenda Aloff is a pioneer in her field. She knows the in's and out's of dog behavior better than anyone I have ever read.
This book explains not only what you should do, but why you should do it and helps dispell some of the "old school" trains of thought regarding dogs, behavior and training.
TRULY A MUST HAVE!

Guide to Owning a Shih Tzu: Puppy Care, Grooming, Training, History, Health, Breed Standard (Re Dog Series)

Guide to Owning a Shih Tzu: Puppy Care, Grooming, Training, History, Health, Breed Standard (Re Dog Series) Customer Review: Overly focused on showing/competitions
This book is great if you're looking to figure out whether your shih tzu is showable and can participate in competitions. Other than that, there are far more helpful books out there in terms of puppy care, how to work with and train a shih tzu, etc. I didn't learn anything from this book since I don't intend to show my dog. There isn't anything else in this book that is unique or particularly well done. If you do want to show your furry friend... this might be for you

Dog Talk : Training Your Dog Through A Canine Point Of View

Dog Talk : Training Your Dog Through A Canine Point Of View

The only dog-training book that really gets through to the canine brain beneath all that fur.

Incorporating the revolutionary teaching of John Ross's prominent dog-training school, this is the first and only dog-training book that truly takes owners inside the canine mind. Central to Ross's technique is the notion that a dog responds to its owner as the pack leader, and that this leader must take the dominant role in the relationship between human and dog. By encouraging owners to act in a canine manner, Ross emphasizes sure-fire techniques to help dogs through the behaviors they need to learn. Among the hundreds of useful training tips included in Dog Talk are:

* Always use your dog's name prior to the command: "Bentley, heel!"
* When training a puppy, try moving a desired object like a dog biscuit over and behind your dog's head to induce him to "sit."
* Do not use your dog's name-- which he associates with being called toward you-- when commanding him to "stay."
* Don't yell "Come!" in a threatening manner while chasing after a disobedient puppy or you may well have just trained him to run away on command.
* Giving a "No" command while your dog is thinking about a bad behavior is even more effective than giving it during the behavior.

Customer Review: Excellent Book
I met the author, John Ross, a few years ago at a lecture he gave here in town. The book is well written, easy to follow, and above all Mr. Ross' training methods are FAIR TO THE DOG. I love that he approaches training through the eyes of the dog. Through understanding our dogs and seeing their point of view, we can build a good, solid relationship with them. We can allow them to be dogs, obey us as their pack leaders, and we can truly enjoy them as companions and dear friends. I watched in amazement as Mr. Ross worked his dog Drifter throughout the lecture. The love and devotion between the two of them was obvious. It was the way it "should be" for all animals and their caretakers. I highly recommend this book - and if you can catch a lecture by Mr. Ross - please do attend. He is terrific.

Training Your Dog : The Step-by-Step Manual (Howell Reference Books)

Training Your Dog : The Step-by-Step Manual (Howell Reference Books) Eight carefully planned lessons teach you to apply canine/human learning patterns to train your dog simply, effectively, and permanently.
Customer Review: It really works!!!
Hello! I'm training my Golden Retriever puppy with this book, and Volhard & Fisher's training methods have worked wonders!!! My puppy, at four months of age, has been taught to sit on command, heel on command, and down on command. You can also teach your dog signals for the commands you want them to do, which can come in handy if you're talking on the telephone or chatting with a friend while walking your puppy. The main idea Volhar and Fisher teach you during this book is "positive reinforcement", which is a really handy training method to use. If their methods can work on my stubborn, rambunctious, sly Golden Retriever puppy, this book can definetly perform miracles with YOUR dogs!!!

Outwitting Dogs: Revolutionary Techniques For Dog Training That Work!

Outwitting Dogs: Revolutionary Techniques For Dog Training That Work!

Training dogs has traditionally been done by using negative reinforcement and brute force (take the choke collar as an example). But the tide is turning, and Terry Ryan, well-known dog trainer, is at the forefront of a revolution. OUTWITTING DOGS draws on her twentyfive years of hands-on experience helping people understand and train dogs, and solve dog behavior problems using kinder, gentler methods. OUTWITTING DOGS uses more brain than brawn to motivate dog behavior with positive training techniques, and helps readers truly understand the minds of their canine friends (and even enemies).

Chapters cover: . outwitting puppies . housebreaking . curing the chronic chewer . how to cure the leash puller, the dog that jumps on people, the dog that hates to be left alone, the dog that won't come, the dog that barks too much, the biter, the aggressor . how to outwit the neighbor's dog . how to teach your dog tricks . how to outwit dog trainers . and even a chapter on outwitting dogs and kids at the same time, and much more.

No sensible dog owner will want to be without a copy.

Customer Review: Here is how to outwit your dog for sure!
I bought this book only because my dog was on the cover. What a thrill to realize that the very key which made my dog such a versatile dog actor was all in the book!!Had a wonderful afternoon of reading
My whole philosophy has always been how i can be smarter than this dog?My goal was to have the dog think she thought of it!Terry lays it all out and it should be required reading for any puppy buyer and especially for the terrier owner!!Though I have worked with dogs in Show biz for thirty years I find this book keeps my thoughts fresh and my dogs working happily!! I keep it handy... Susan Jaffe

Customer Review: It works - It really works!
I want everyone to know that this book works. Our Jack Russell Terrier had benn thrown away by their previous owner and when we found her at the county dump, she was dirty, skittish and had no house manners -if you know what I mean. We cleaned her up, loved on her and started training. She learned everything we taught her except when to let us know she had to pee. This book uses tough love. It said to bring the dog back to the scene of the crime and say the work "SHAME". and immediately put her in her crate and ignore her. Two times we did this and she got it. She learned to go to the door and let us know she needed to go out. Now she stays home all day by herself and she doesn't mess in the house.

There are no bad dogs, there are bad owners. Buy this book and become a good owner. Your dog will love you for it.

Guide to Owning a Great Dane: Puppy Care, Health, Feeding, Training, Showing, Breed Standard (Re Dog Series) Customer Review: The Guide To Owning A Great Dane
The book had some really great glossy pictures. I did not think the book was very informative it sort of touched on different subjects but nothing in depth it was VERY basic. It did not help me on my decision on whether or not to add a Great Dane to my family. I am considering getting a Great Dane and this book was not helpful at all except to show me some very nice pictures of some gorgeous dogs and puppies. It was a nice read but not very helpful or informative.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Positive Dog Training, 2nd Edi (Complete Idiot's Guide to)

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Positive Dog Training, 2nd Edi (Complete Idiot's Guide to) Spare the punishment and raise a happy, well-behaved dog

The Complete Idiots Guide to Positive Dog Training, Second Edition, replaces the standard punishment-based training methods that have potential consequences for puppies and limited effectiveness with older dogs. This guide demonstrates positive training methods, based on a system of rewards and encouragement, to teach basic commands and housetraining, and correct a host of problem behaviors. Readers will also learn loose-leash walking games and how to train for the American Kennel Clubs increasingly popular Canine Good Citizen test.

Dog owners number more than 40 million in the United States, and more and more of them are giving up on punitive training methods
One of the few Dog Training Books that exclusively adheres to positive training methods
Customer Review: I'm an idiot and I approve this book...
As the owner of three terriers, I was happy to find a book that endorsed positive training methods. The mere sight of pinch collars make me a little sick, but then again, I am no dog training expert, I am a regular "idiot" who purchased this book for help.

Dennison, I think, does a thorough job of explaining positive training methods and the science behind them. I like her sense of humor, ("I'd rather eat poop than come!") and the way that she breaks down training into manageable tasks. I have seen wonderful results with all three of my terriers after a very brief time.

And just for the record, I'm not sure that all of the people who reviewed this book actually read it. NOWHERE did I find an exercise that involved tying your dog up with a 6 foot leash and approaching him/her to discourage jumping. Dennison openly states that she does not believe in using leashes as a training tool unless you are teaching "come" (which requires a LONG leash and NO tying up) or loose leash walking. Perhaps this person reviewed the wrong book or simply voiced a very misguided opinion.

Secondly, training a dog with positive methods requires WORK and BRAIN POWER. It is much easier to pop a leash, yell or hit. This method is effective because you learn to communicate with your dog in their "language." I agree with the reviewer who stated that practicing positive methods strengthened their relationship with their dog. The same happened with me. So, if you'd like a healthy relationship with your dog that involves "leading" rather than "dominating" check out this book!

So Your Dog's Not Lassie: Tips for Training Difficult Dogs and Independent Breeds

So Your Dog's Not Lassie: Tips for Training Difficult Dogs and Independent Breeds OK. You're dog doesn't live to please you. There, we've said it. Contrary to what you've always heard, not all dogs want to earn their owner's approval. Sometimes they seem as if they could not care less. But this is no secret to you -- you know your dog's not Lassie.

With this book you will come to understand and appreciate that for hundreds of years dogs were bred for qualities like independence, dominance and determination. While these traits make dogs excellent hunters, trackers and fighters, they can make day-to-day living with your pet a real challenge.

Betty Fisher and Suzanne Delzio will teach you how to employ or overcome the traits that make your dog difficult to train. They will show how to use body language, food, voice, training structure and style to convince your stubborn dog to do what you ask. Without force, you can turn your difficult dog into a perfect pet, or even a successful show dog.
Customer Review: Best book for the dog with her own agenda!
This is a great book. I have several dogs, and the techniques for training work on them all. However, it is great for my independent pup, a Dogue de Bordeaux.

She was always interested in something else, shutting down when she had enough. Which she will still do, but now I have a way to impart information in a manner she learns while still keeping training sessions short enough to keep her interest!

Customer Review: Pictures Without Substance
This is a nice coffee table picture book. However, when a specific behavior issue comes up about my dog's behavior the text is lacking. Wish the author would give more specifics on the select topics covered in this book. Not an on the spot survival kit!

Beyond Basic Dog Training

Beyond Basic Dog Training Since its initial publication, Beyond Basic Dog Training has achieved well deserved recognition as an innovative, unique guide to obedience instruction. Obedience authority Diane Baumans proven training philosophy asserts that the time has come to go beyond training dogs and start teaching them to please us. This has made a vital difference for those who use her methodand for dogs taught by it to succeed in competitive canine sports.

In this new, updated edition, Bauman presents the most current knowledge on canine learning patterns. Believing that dogs learn by trial and error, Bauman provides a novel approach that encourages dogs to learn by removing corrections for incorrect responses. As a result, dogs do not fear failure and are taught to exercise options in a quest for the desired behavior.

Bauman shows you how to become a "thinking handler" who can train the "thinking dog." Her remarkable ability to view training from the dogs perspective translates into an invaluable tool for building effective communication between you and your dog.

The instruction in this authoritative guide is behind Gaines "Superdogs," numerous obedience trial champions, and a host of other canine successes. If you want your dog to be happy, confident stimulated, and secure in the obedience ring, Beyond Basic Dog Training is the book of choice.
Customer Review: Dog Training book that's in a league of its own
Diane Bauman's book is one of the best books in its genre. It is not at all surprising that the author's a winning trainer of up to four breeds in obedience trails. The recommendations in this book, like its title, go beyond basic training (clicker or otherwise), taking owners one step further into tweaking and polishing oftentimes assumed basic but nonetheless important commands like HEELING for dogs. Its succint chapters make it convenient for the reader to pause and assimilate some of best (but not necessarily the easiest for less experienced handlers like myself) tried and tested methods to teaching dogs how to think and even preempt(!). The book's only drawback is one that is purely aesthetics (lack of colored photos) but one that is overcomed by the author's highly motivational style of writing. This is a book for owners with an aim to cultivating a deeper relationship with their dogs via the systematic construction of a repertoire of common vocabulary. While I have no wish to put my three dogs through obedience trails, Bauman's book still scores very highly in the must-read list of Dog Training books as it will help anyone who's keen to hone their skills in dealing with their dogs in a loving yet firm basis. 5 stars for readability, effectiveness and excellence in being in a league of its own!

Training Pointing Dogs

Training Pointing Dogs "What does Paul Long say about it?" is the question often asked by most serious trainers. Recently revised with new photographs and format, Training Pointing Dogs highlights the sage guidance of this master dog trainer. In simple question-and-answer format, Long answers the questions most asked by trainers, professional and amateur alike.

Should I try to train my dog myself? Do I need to use a whistle? How do I deal with a dog who sulks after correction? When should I breed my male dog? How do I stop my dog from barking at night without cause? What should I do if my dog will point a dead bird but not pick up and retrieve it?

Paul Long's answers to these questions are practical and filled with a good sense and subtle, wry humor of a wily veteran. His answer to the last question above is a delightful example: "Retrieving is a pretty sight and desirable. Elsewhere in the book you will find suggestions for encouraging your dog to retrieve. But if you have no success, remember that it is a rare sight to see a man point a bird. However, many men have a back strong enough to lean down and pick up a bird that a dog has located and pointed dead." (6 X 9, 112 pages, b&w photos)
Customer Review: There are better birddog books available.
This book is an o.k. read and offers some good information if you don't mind sifting through the outdated advice. (First Copyright in 1974).

Customer Review: My dog finally stopped having accidents!
When I saw the title that included House Training Puppies & ADULT Dogs too, I figured I'd make a last-ditch effort to get my two year old dog to finally stop having accidents. I didn't know what I was doing wrong... I was following a food and water schedule, walking him plenty, and still there were accidents on a regular basis.

Now that I've read this book and followed the methods, my dog has completely stopped having housebreaking accidents! The main thing that was helpful was reading all of the "troubleshooting" tips, which helped me figure out what my dog's confusion was and how to train him.

If your dog or puppy is having housebreaking accidents, I highly recommend this book!

A Howell Dog Book of Distinction
Customer Review: The classics never die
This book continues to be THE unequivocal expert's choice. Despite comments that her methods are 'dated' (a remark I find says more about that reviewer than about Strickland's book) the simple fact is that dog training is a skill that has been honed for hundreds of years. These methods were found to be effective when much more was required of dogs than that they be fashionable, pampered companions. I sincerely doubt that the 'innovations' and gimmicks of recent years will be found, in the end, to be more than passing fads. You can have your clickers... what Wynn teaches is *real* obedience.

If you want solid, competent, reliable response from your dogs, then use Wynn's methods and her books. Otherwise, continue bribing and entreating and cajoling your dog with clickers and treats instead of training it. Don't worry, *eventually* they will do what you want... at least half the time.

Those who want a thorough grounding in training basics will find this a wonderful resource. It is still the most comprehensive collection of training basics out there. Dogs trained with this method will be happy, reliable workers. Isn't that what we all want?

Customer Review: A little behind in modern training techniques
With years of experience in training working dogs, I have decided to try Agility for a break in the routine! I thought this book would be good, but, alas, it is way behind in training techniques. I was quite put off by the mis-information, and in some cases, harmful information given. Very dissapointing. The author probably does have great depth of knowledge on the subject, but needs to attend a few up to date classes in dog communication, Operant Conditioning, or training in drive (all quite simular in application) and then re-write the book.

It's Not the Dogs, It's the People! A Dog Trainer's Guide to Training Humans

It's Not the Dogs, It's the People! A Dog Trainer's Guide to Training Humans Finally, a book for dog trainers on training the more difficult species -- humans! Powerful, practical techniques trainers can apply immediately; dealing with difficult personality types; handling sticky situations; unrealistic expectations; training hordes of wild humans; and much more. Written in a down-to-earth, humorous style and packed with invaluable tips.
Customer Review: Great Insight
This is a good book to help teach those at the "other end of the leash." Information can be direct but most communication is by perception.

Customer Review: Not just bad advice -- *dangerous* advice!
I picked up this book looking to learn more about the adolescent stage of dogs. What I found instead was bad information, some of it downright dangerous.

The first chapter I turned to was on behavior problems, and here I read something that horrified me. Ms. Benjamin says that you should punish a dog if it growls at you to defend its food. This is, unfortunately, the perfect recipe to create a dog that bites without warning. If you do this, you don't punish the dog for being aggressive around its food -- you punish the dog for warning you that it is uncomfortable and will bite if pushed further. You stop the growling, but not the "feeling of threat" that the dog has. If you punish other warning signs, such as snapping, you will also cause those signs to disappear. Without the warnings, you will not know that your dog is not comfortable with what you are doing until it feels threatened enough that it has to bite -- and it will bite without warning.

Ms. Benjamin also perpetuates the terribly outdated notion that you can end a bad behavior by punishing the dog after the behavior has happened as long as there is a "reminder" you can show the dog. Reminder or not, punishment never works unless it is timed correctly -- that means that you have to punish during the behavior itself. If the dog has already stopped, it's too late, and you're punishing something else entirely.

Finally, Ms. Benjamin says that "positive training," that is, training without physical punishment, does not work. That is absolutely false. Considering that this book was written over a decade ago, I don't find this attitude surprising at all, but it is wrong. "Positive" traditional training works when used properly. Modern "positive" training works when used properly. Both sides can point to examples of failures from the other group, but that doesn't mean the methods don't work.

There is a little bit of good information, such as "anger has no place in dog training" and "dogs don't act out of spite." But the average dog owner cannot distinguish between the good information and the bad, and the bad is bad enough that I have to strongly recommend than an owner or novice dog trainer avoid this book altogether.

If you are looking for positive traditional training, find another author, one who understands the proper way to use punishment and understands how dogs learn. If you are looking for modern positive training, I recommend Dr. Ian Dunbar's books. He uses only non-physical punishment, and clearly explains how to be a benevolent leader for your dog. His methods debunk the false-but-popular myth that positive = permissive (as another reviewer mistakenly believes). His methods are strict but fair and without physical punishment. The results are amazing to watch and can be seen in his off-leash work with his malamute in one of his videos -- he has great control of his dog. (As an aside, his book "Before and After Getting Your Puppy" will prevent a lot of the problems dealt with in this book.)

Customer Review: Great for your Beagle to Show!
This book started off to be very helpful, but then we don't plan on showing our beagle, so a lot of the chapters weren't geared for our purposes. But again, this is just our opinion. Good reading.

Customer Review: Your dog is sure to excel at agility with this book!
The 3rd book in the Excelling at Dog Agility can be described with one word: FANTASTIC!

Simmons-Moake wastes no time getting into the good stuff, and starts out this very advanced book with advancing your weave-pole skills. She covers difficult and "impossible" weave entries and how to train them the right way... and succeed! Moving on to the pause table in the next chapter, she explains the concepts behind a perfect pause table performance, namely teaching your dog to "grip the table," get an immediate sit/down, and correct the perpetually sliding pooch.

Other than the weaves and table, the rest of the book really focuses on the handler and developing his/her skills. Learn to "layer" courses designed to trip you up (literally!), perform precise pinwheels and super serpentine sequences. Improve your distance handling with this book, so that gambles are no longer a gamble!

Some really great things about this book:
· Extremely advanced skill taught in an understandable way
· Home practice tips and exercises
· A section on evaluating your handling and training skills, and addressing the dog who is "over drilled"
· The MOST helpful Problem Q&A section I have ever seen for problems ranging from the dog being too fast/slow to control issues and more!

Though this book is definitely not for the beginner and will probably require a professional instructor's guidance, it is a great way to increase your knowledge on the subject and improve your handling skills. Like the two previous books, this is an THE way to achieve excellence, yet a very enjoyable read. Kudos to Jane Simmons-Moake for creating the best books on dog agility out there!

Customer Review: Immense knowledgebase of info on K9 behavior
I got a new puppy about 6 months ago. This was just about a 2 year process that involved searching out a specific breed that fit my personality and lifestyle and reading piles (Probably $500 worth) of books about raising puppies, training, specific breed books, etc. Mainly because I have always been deathly afraid of owning that unruly dog would be a nightmare to have around the house.

Of the 20 books that I have, this book is by far the most in depth and well researched of all. Most books on the subject of dogs in general are short overviews that should take care of some specific needs, such as potty training, obedience, tricks, etc. This book has a culmination of 100+ years of scientific research and other case studies of not only dogs but of the behavior mentally and physically of other creatures and how they apply to dogs. There is so much information to soak in, its incredible. I read through it occasionally had to sit back in awe thinking about what i've just read and how many things make sense now.

I seriously think that most books will get 90% of dog owners by without a problem. This book is for those 10%, or breeders, trainers who need to have that extra level of knowledge. I'd compare it to needing a cupfull of knowledge and receiving 5 gallons instead.

Livestock Protection Dogs: Selection, Care, and Training

Customer Review: Addresses both the adolescent and mature dog
From wolves hungering for sheep to foxes in the henhouse, ranchers and farmers have always had to deal with the problem of predators. The use of dogs as a front line of defense against predators has achieved even greater popularity with the rising trends prohibiting the use of poisons, traps, and guns. Now in a newly revised and expanded second edition, Livestock Protection Dogs: Selection, Care And Training, by Orysia Dawydiak and David E. Sims defines what constitutes a livestock protection dog; surveys the various dog breeds; provides key advice on puppy selection; addresses both the adolescent and mature dog; identifies specific behavioral probelms and their solutions, and more. If you are in need of a dog to protect your property and your livestock, Livestock Protection Dogs will prove to be invaluable reading.

Beginning Family Dog Training

Beginning Family Dog Training A must have for any dog owner, this user-friendly and engaging book employs gentle and effective methods rather than punishment-oriented techniques that so often lead to aggression. Covering commands from sit and down to heeling and coming when called, this book explains how dogs communicate, think, and learn in order to train them effectively with scientifically-based, humane methods. If you love dogs, you'll love this book!
Customer Review: So simple, so precise.
This is not a book for someone working on a difficult behavior problem, nor is it a doctoral thesis. This is, just as the title says, a beginner's book for family dog training. There are no long explanations of some behavioral malady written in psycho-speak. I am quite sure Dr. McConnell could indeed do that if she wished, as there is no way something so elegantly simple could come from anything less a true expert.

66 pages of useful information. In this day and time, that's hard to find, even in a dog book of 300 pages or more. An easy read, simple, to the point- perfectly fits the title. Should be on every dog owner's bookshelf.

Excelling at Dog Agility - Book 2: Sequence Training (Excelling at Dog Agility)

Excelling at Dog Agility - Book 2: Sequence Training (Excelling at Dog Agility) Excelling at Dog Agility - Book 2: Sequence Training

- Teaches you how to sequence smoothly from one obstacle to the next, to reach your dog's highest potential for speed and accuracy.
- Helps you develop a consistent set of cues for communicating with your dog on the Agility course. As a result, your dog will understand your directives in an instant, even at the highest of speeds and the greatest of distances.
- Provides detailed lesson plans for Beginner,

Intermediate I, and Intermediate II agility training classes.

- Is the perfect companion to Competitive Agility Training with Jane Simmons-Moake, Tape 2: Sequence Training Named Best Video of the Year by the Dog Writers Association of America.
Customer Review: Take the Next Step in Excelling at Agility!
4-Paws up for book 2 in the Excelling at Dog Agility "series" by Jane Simmons-Moake!

This extraordinary guide takes you from beginner to intermediate using easy-to-follow text loaded with pictures, diagrams, and tons of sample exercises. Get started with straight line and simple turn sequences then move at your own pace to distance control and "side-switches." Simmons-Moake is extremely thorough in her method and emphasizes not striving for "good" but for excellence! Her method makes it practically impossible to fail. Some of the important topics in this book are the introduction of distance and control commands, gaining distance with her "distance circles" technique, and how to give correct body cues for accurate performance every time. She also touches on the controversial concept of "correction-free training." To top off a wonderful "curriculum" of doggy schooling, she includes several pages of exercises you can do with just a few obstacles to drill key elements or your dog's weaknesses.

A few other features I really enjoyed:
 LOTS of diagrams!
Tips for solving problems like broken start-line stays
 Proofing ideas and exercises
An entire chapter on every type of side-switch imaginable! (including rear-cross, front-cross, counter rotations, zig-zags, and more!)

...and for those who are agility instructors or thinking of teaching agility, there are sample lesson plans for a 6-week Beginners class, 8-week Intermediate class, and 6-week Intermediate II class.

I cannot stop praising this book! It has certainly improved the performance of my own dogs and allowed me to progress more quickly with proven techniques. It is the perfect addition to any agility lover's bookshelf!

A Howell Dog Book of Distinction
Customer Review: Experience is the best teacher....
I suppose a person can learn to remove an appendix, fly a plane, or conduct a defense by reading a book; but I know I would prefer my surgeon, pilot, and attorney to have had some hands-on experience before practicing on me. Same thing goes for herding livestock - there just is no substitute for a good trainer who knows what they are doing. Having a background in obedience, tracking, and agility gave me no headstart in herding - and no amount of bookreading changed that. When I found a trainer who was able to read me and my dogs, communicate with us, and be fair but firm, we made great progress.

With that said, I think this book is very helpful as a supplement to practice sessions. Learning to read stock and dogs, understanding pressure and release, draws, balance points - all those concepts have to be learned by the human and there is no substitute for learning in the field, in actual practice. If a friend wanted a basic herding book to look at to see if it is something they might want to do, this would be the one book I would probably recommend. Better yet, though, would be to have this person actually come out and watch dogs working stock.

If you are doomed to be an armchair shepherd, then this book is fine. Otherwise, your money is better invested in a herding instinct test, a stock handling class, or a day spent observing at a herding training facility. Books are an adjunct, at best, to learning to work with your dog in herding.

Gun Dog : Revolutionary Rapid Training Method

Gun Dog : Revolutionary Rapid Training Method Customer Review: Great book
I used this method 11 years ago to train my Golden to hunt. He has performed wonderfully and has hunted with me and loved going afield all these years. Arthritis has limited his ability, but he still loves to go. I am picking up a Llewellin pup in a few weeks and plan on using Wolter's methods once again. I highly recommend this to any novice hunting dog owner.

Guide to Owning a Labrador Retriever: Puppy Care, Retrieving, Training, History, Health, Breed Standard (Re Dog Series)

Guide to Owning a Labrador Retriever: Puppy Care, Retrieving, Training, History, Health, Breed Standard (Re Dog Series) Customer Review: Great Summary Treatment On Owning A Labrador!
As a person who has had the distinct pleasure of sharing my house and my life with as many as six Labrador retrievers at a time over the last 20 years (I now have five), I am acutely aware of the wonder and awe associated with getting such a wonderful companion can be. yet, sadly, I am also aware of the profound ignorance many would-be labrador-people are regarding how to select, introduce, and socialize this new member of the family. In that sense, this book , along with a number of others such as Richard Wolper's "Family Dog", can provide the wary would-be initate with all of the essentails on how to successfully transform that cute little puppy into a happy, obedient, and well-integrated member of the household.

This book does offer one the expert advice one needs regarding the care and nurture of what has now become the single most popular breed in the United States, with information ranging from an impromptu history of Labrador Retrievers to such topics such as adoption options. The book also features a wealth of facts and details regarding Labrador Retrievers. It provides essential and vital information regarding nutrition, socialization, and exercise, and offers some sage advice about how to find and select a reputable breeder. In addition, it also touches on aspects of ownerships such as common illnesses and chronic problems associated with the breed. This is a book I can heartily recommend!

The Koehler Method of Dog Training

The Koehler Method of Dog Training The book that pioneered a uniquely effective dog training methodback in print at last

First published in 1962, The Koehler Method of Dog Training is one of the most influential dog training books of all time. Now, Howell Book House is pleased to reissue this book for a new generation of trainers and dog lovers. Featuring a new cover design and new introduction, the book shows how to use both positive and negative reinforcement to form a strong, joyful bond between dog and handler. The Koehler method remains unmatched in its reliability, especially when applied to difficult dogs and intractable behavior problems.

William Koehler was a dog training innovator who worked as the chief animal trainer for Walt Disney Studios and the training director for one of the worlds largest dog clubs.
Customer Review: Review from a Certified Pet Dog Trainer
Let's be straight -- Bill Koehler loved dogs. In fact, he loved and respected dogs a whole lot more than some of today's "big name" trainers who refer to dogs as stupid creatures, incapable of thought or responsibility, only able and willing to work for a cookie, because they are nothing but selfish "lemon brains."

I am a professional dog trainer who came up through the ranks of the "positive reinforcement" school of training. I was taught to use cookies and praise to get dogs to behave. And most of all, NEVER correct a dog -- that's cruel and outdated. Well, the "all positive" method of training does work -- to a point. But I found, time and time again, that only using positive reinforcement did not create reliable, 100% consistent behaviours. Where this was most obvious was on the recall -- let's say your dog is off leash at the park, and he takes off after a squirrel. And you're going to try to call him back and give him a tidbit? Most dogs would just keep on running. And to my mind, as a professional trainer, that was unethical and immoral, to send my clients out into the world, knowing full-well that their dogs were not safe, because their behaviours were not reliable.

The Koehler method makes commands reliable. And it does so without abuse, fear, or beating. Bill Koehler belived that it was far kinder to a dog to respect the dog's intelligence, to show the dog the clear contrast in consequences that occur when choosing between one course of action (say, heeling) over another (not heeling, and receiving a SINGLE forceful, well-timed correction). Correct the dog once, properly, the first time, and let the dog make his own choices after that. In fact, Koehler believed it was completely CRUEL to a dog to consistently nag it, over and over again. Witness the "positive only" crowd using gentle, nagging leash tugs, saying "Heel heel heel heel heel" in a chanting manner. Drive your dog crazy, it would.

The Koehler Method is a complete method of dog training that works on three parts:

1) show the dog what you want them to do, and praise him for making the right choice.
2) practice with the dog until you are sure he knows what you want him to do, and praise him for making the right choice. If he doesn't make the right choice while he's learning, then show him again.
3) once the dog knows what is expected of him (that is, after lots of practice), then "proof" the command by providing lots of distractions for the dog. If he chooses the right behaviour (and remember, this is only if he already KNOWS what is expected), then praise him. If he chooses the wrong behaviour, correct him firmly, correct him once, and give him the opportunity to make the right choice.

You'll read reviews that go on and on about hanging, drowning, and beating dogs. Yes, Bill Koehler DID say those things. He said those were methods to be used if the next stop for the dog was a one-way trip to the pound. They were never intended for your average family dog.

Buy the book, read it. Find a reputable trainer through the International Association of Canine Professionals, and get someone familiar with the Koehler method to help you out. But don't let the "positive only" crowd make up your mind with ranting and rhetoric. If you care about your dog - if you care that your dog will be able to respond to commands reliably, and therefore be safe -- you owe it to yourself to check out this book.
